While I embarked on another project, I always find myself coming back to the work of Massimo Vignelli. He’s was one of the most influential Graphic Designers of all time. He has worked with some of the biggest companies global brands such as Ford, JCPenney, and IBM, along with many other huge companies. Many pieces of his work are still in use today and have become iconic to the identity of certain companies. He has publically been critical of other designers and works in the industry. In particular American Airlines logo which was changed in 2013 after been in use since 1968.
I am currently doing ongoing a signage project, I went back to one of Vignelli's most publicly used works. The New York underground. Inspired by the London Underground Vignelli has designed a easy to use system by creating all of the routes straight and simple to follow. Ones you’ve tuned into the visual language it’s an easy guide to get you from a to b. As I have a recently visited Lisbon and being able to compare the bus iconography and guide to the New York subway I can already tell which one was easier and user friendly.
